The next morning arrives with wonderful news: Russ can leave the hospital. He slowly lifts himself from bed. He’s weak and eight pounds lighter, but his health is on the upswing and I am elated to finally bring him home.

The clouds part further that afternoon when we receive the phone call we’ve been awaiting since Friday. The surgery worked! We can proceed with IVF.

Taking Flight with Clipped Wings

With the success of Russ’ surgery and his specimen safely preserved in a medical freezer at the fertility clinic, the baton is handed to me. My first requirement is to undergo a hysterosalpingogram (HSG), and Dr. Steiger candidly alerts me to the fact that most women find it painful. I’m standing at the starting line of IVF and my physician is already using the word “painful.” I exhale deeply reminding myself that I can do this.

Two friends have undergone this procedure and both clearly grimace when asked about it. I learn that via the vagina, a tube is inserted into the uterus through which dye is administered and analyzed on x-ray. The overall goal is to determine the health of my uterus, two fallopian tubes, and other internal reproductive plumbing.

Dr. Steiger mentions that he often prescribes patients Valium for the procedure, and before he has the opportunity to ask my preference, I’m a human bobblehead nodding vigorously and affirmatively. Yes, please. I may have even handed him the prescription pad on his desk.

I have never taken a sedative before, but if it is warranted for any situation, this is it.
